Public Computing : Reconnecting People to Science ∗

چکیده

The majority of the world’s computing power is no longer in supercomputer centers and institutional machine rooms. Instead, it is now distributed in the hundreds of millions of personal computers all over the world. In a few more years, other consumer devices like game consoles and television set-top boxes may comprise a large fraction of total computing power. This change is critical to scientists whose research requires extreme computing power. Projects like SETI@home and Folding@home have attracted millions of participants who donate time on their home PCs to a scientific effort. Work is underway to create similar projects in many other areas, enabling scientific explorations that were previously infeasible. The implications of this ”public computing” paradigm are social as well as scientific. It provides a basis for global communities centered around common interests and goals. It creates incentives for the public to learn about current scientific research. Ultimately, it will give the public more direct control over the directions of science progress.

Confronting the challenges in reconnecting urban planning and public health.

Although public health and urban planning emerged with the common goal of preventing urban outbreaks of infectious disease, there is little overlap between the fields today. The separation of the fields has contributed to uncoordinated efforts to address the health of urban populations and a general failure to recognize the links between, for example, the built environment and health disparitie...

Reconnection Choices: Selecting the Most Valuable (vs. Most Preferred) Dormant Ties

Recent research has shown that reconnecting long-lost, dormant ties can yield tremendous value, often more than active ties. Yet two key research questions remain unanswered: which of a person’s many dormant ties provide the most value, and which are advice seekers most inclined to choose as reconnection targets? In the current study, we asked executives to seek advice on an important work proj...

Dormant Ties: The Value Of Reconnecting

The social networks literature suggests that ties must be maintained to retain value. In contrast, we show that reconnecting dormant ties—former ties, now out of touch—can be extremely useful. Our research prompted Executive MBA students to consult their dormant contacts about an important work project; outcomes compared favorably to those of their current ties. In addition, reconnecting previo...
